My husband sent me yet another depressing article this morning about rising food prices world wide. Due to high costs for fuel for shipping and poor weather conditions destroying crops, fresh produce, meat and dairy cost have sky rocketed. Now even TAPIOCA costs are going up!  Where does it end?? Rush to Use Crops as Fuel Raises Food Prices and Hunger Fears The starchy cassava root has long been an important ingredient in everything from tapioca pudding and ice cream to paper and animal feed. For the last few years I have been starting seeds in those little plastic Burpee or Jiffy seed starting greenhouses.  I am here to tell you, DON"T WASTE YOUR MONEY. They are flimsy for the cost and those ghastly peat pods never expand to their expected size, they hold too much water initially and then never quite absorb the way they are supposed to again, PLUS the little "biodegradable" netting so not biodegradable. Even occasional use vegetables should be put on the back burner until you are sure you have what you need. I use parsnips about 5 times a year. Yes they are pricey and I do love to use them, but giving up the garden Read more [...]
This morning my husband sent me a very interesting article that depressed me and inspired me all at the same time. According to Yahoo!, wholesale food prices are the highest they have ever been. At 1.6% up, it is the steepest increase we have seen in 36 years: The Labor Department said Wednesday that the Producer Price Index rose a seasonally adjusted 1.6 percent in February -- double the 0.8 percent rise in the previous month. Outside of food and energy costs, the core index ticked up 0.2 percent, Read more [...]
